Audience
This course is suitable for all practitioners working with children, particularly staff new to safeguarding training. The course content is developed specifically for staff working within an early years and childcare setting.
For experienced staff who are needing to update their child protection training, 'The Basic Child Protection Refresher' training will be the most appropriate course to attend.
Aims
This safeguarding course will introduce practitioners to the categories of abuse and neglect and their signs and indicators. Data will be shared relating to the prevalence of child maltreatment. Practitioners will be familiarised with Cambridgeshire’s Safeguarding and Child Protection protocols.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board have validated this training for its quality and relevance to national and local policy.
This course will enable compliance with section 3.24 of the statutory framework for the EYFS, 2024: "Training made available by the provider must enable staff to identify signs of possible abuse and neglect at the earliest opportunity, and to respond in a timely and appropriate way".
A certificate will be issued for attendance which is valid for three years.
Additional information
If attending online, participants are required to interact with the trainers and where possible have their cameras on. The participant will be expected to complete follow-up activities in the setting with the Designated Safeguarding Lead for early years and childcare.

Audience
The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for early years and childcare in settings should be senior members of staff (ideally Level 3 with at least two years post-qualifying experience), who have attended the Basic Child Protection or Basic Child Protection Refresher course within the last three years.
Consideration must be given to part-time and shift hours to ensure a DSL is available in the setting during all opening times. There will therefore usually be a need for more than one trained DSL in a setting.
Schools: This course is designed for practitioners working in early years and childcare settings and is only suitable if you have on-site childcare provision.
Aims
To gain an in-depth understanding of the role and the responsibilities of the DSL in an early years and childcare setting. To feel confident in fulfilling the role's requirements and have the skills to liaise with local statutory children's services agencies and the Local Safeguarding Partners (LSP).
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board have validated this training for its quality and relevance to national and local policy.
This course will support compliance with section 3.4 of the statutory framework for the EYFS, 2024: "In every setting, a practitioner must be designated to take lead responsibility for safeguarding children. The lead practitioner is responsible for liaising with local statutory children's services agencies and with the LSP. All practitioners must be alert to any issues of concern in the child’s life at home or elsewhere."
A certificate will be issued on completion of the full two-day course.

Participants must have attended the Basic Child Protection training or Basic Child Protection Refresher course within the last three years.

Audience
This training is suitable for Designated Safeguarding Lead for early years and childcare (DSL) who will gain the knowledge and confidence to manage disclosures of domestic abuse and provide support for children and families.
Aims
National research shows that the impact on children experiencing or witnessing domestic abuse can be wide-ranging, damaging, and in some cases, dangerous. It can impair a child’s achievement, alter their behaviour, and may lead to them becoming victims or perpetrators themselves; the lasting effects mean that early support and intervention are crucial.
Participants have the additional knowledge necessary to become the Domestic Abuse Lead for their setting to enable them to deal confidently with disclosures and provide support for children and families. The session will include a reference to the new Domestic Abuse Act 2021 which updates the definition of domestic abuse and recognises children experiencing domestic abuse as victims in their own right.
The session will include references to Domestic Abuse referral and assessment processes, including the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC), and the vital role that early years’ settings play in reducing the risk to children who live with domestic abuse and violence through the use of appropriate information sharing.
