Expected Dates:

Monday 10 May 2027 – English grammar, punctuation and spelling

Tuesday 11 May 2027 – English reading

Wednesday 12 May 2027 – Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) and Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning)

Thursday 13 May 2027 – Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)

End of KS2 Writing Moderation 2027

Currently, the end of KS2 writing moderation will take place between Monday 7 June until Friday 25 June however this is being reviewed by the STA as this would leave just a 3-week moderation window. STA have stated that final dates will be agreed at the start of the autumn term.

Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November 2026 – Leading Assessment course  

Included in this training will be a look at the moderation visit format introduced in 2024, this is especially pertinent for school leaders whose schools were last moderated in 2023. Places can be booked via the Core Training Offer on Booking Bug

Friday 14 May 2027 – Majority of schools who will be moderated in 2027 by Cambridgeshire LA will be contacted by email at midday. (Schools selected by STA for a 48-hour notice moderation will not be contacted on this day.)

Tuesday 18 May 2027 – Meeting for Year 6 teachers and Headteachers in schools being moderated at Over Community Centre. 1.30pm until 5pm.

Monday 24 May 2027 – Online meeting for Year 6 teachers and Headteachers in schools being moderated who were unable to attend the training on the 18 May 2027. 4pm until 5.30pm.

Monday 7 June until Friday 25 June 2027 (TBC) – Moderation visits are carried out.

Friday 25 June 2027 (TBC) – Deadline to submit Year 6 teacher assessments for writing on the National Curriculum Assessments Portal

Courses

End of Key Stage 2 Writing Assessment:

Audience: Year 6 teachers

Focus: This two-part course provides Year 6 teachers with a forum to clarify and discuss the teacher assessment of writing. Key documents produced by the Standards and Testing Agency will be explored and discussed. Teachers will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to analyse their pupils' current attainment, identify gaps, and plan next steps. By participating, teachers will ensure their assessment judgements are accurate and aligned with the expectations set out in the end of Key Stage 2 Teacher Assessment Framework for writing

Structure:

Session 1 - 3 or 5 November 2026 – Sunley House Papworth 1.30pm until 4.30pm. Cost: £88 for Cambridgeshire LA schools or £98 for Cambridgeshire Academies and out of county schools. Booking: English tab on Booking Bug.

Unpicking the Teacher Assessment Framework:

Audience: Year 6 teachers

Focus: These online sessions build on the End of KS2 Writing Assessment course. Local Authority moderators will guide participants through materials developed by the Standards and Testing Agency. Participants will gain a clear understanding of key assessment elements, strengthening their ability to make accurate and robust judgements.

Structure:

Online training sessions – 3.45pm until 5.15pm

Session 1 Purpose – 29 September 2026

Session 2 Dialogue – 20 October 2026

Session 3 Register – 16 November 2026

Session 4 Spelling – 7 December 2026

These papers were adapted from the published maths papers in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. Please note - the mock papers from 2019 were organised based on the year group content domain of each question and not in the question order that appeared in the original papers.

Past Standardisation Writing Exercises

Please find below copies of the standardisation exercises used to train moderators. They will provide teachers with additional writing evidence at each standard. Please be aware however of the statements at the start of each exercise linked to the evidence for handwriting and spelling.
