Assessing Writing in Year 6
Audience
Teachers working with Year 6 pupils, English Subject Leaders and / or Senior Leaders
Aims
- To ensure that teachers of Year 6 pupils are aware of key issues and developments linked to the statutory assessment of writing at the end of Key Stage 2
- To support the accurate assessment of writing
- To recognise strengths and gaps in writing, identifying ways to secure pupil outcomes
- To facilitate opportunities for school-to-school discussions around writing
Session 1: (autumn term)
During session 1 there will be the opportunity to:
- Review statutory assessment in Year 6
- Review the Teacher Assessment Framework at KS2 including clarification of the statements within each standard
- Moderate published materials to support and develop the accuracy of moderation judgements
- There will also be the opportunity to moderate current class work. This task is usually table based and competed with colleagues via informal professional discussions to support ongoing teacher assessment of writing
- Part of the session will focus on supporting progress from the expected standard to the greater depth standard.
Session 2: (spring term)
During session 2 there will be an opportunity to:
- Receive assessment updates
- Consider how to build an evidence base to secure judgements in writing for all three standards
- Consider a range of single writing genres and how the standards are met in each
- To moderate current class work via informal professional discussions with colleagues
- Part of the session will focus on supporting progress from the working towards standard to the expected standard.
