Supporting your Child with Maths – guides for parents and carers of children in Reception/KS1 and KS2
These guides can be purchased by schools and shared with families. They aim to help parents and carers to support their children with maths at home and when they are out and about. Numerous studies have shown that when parents and carers support them with maths, children tend to perform better.
The ideas in the packs are designed to be accessible and easy to follow and do not require extensive mathematical knowledge. The packs include age-appropriate ideas for involving children in everyday activities which include maths, talking to them about how maths can be useful, and engaging in discussions in which children are encouraged to explain their thinking. There are also suggestions for maths-related books, websites, board games and places to visit, as well as card games and activities to support number sense. These activities and ideas should enhance school maths provision, whichever scheme you use, and will not interfere with the calculation strategies you teach. In addition to the ideas for supporting children, there is also advice for adults seeking to improve their own mathematical knowledge and confidence.
There are two packs available, one for families with children in Reception and KS1 and the other for families with children in KS2. Schools can buy each pack for £30 from the SIS Shop: School Improvement Service online calendar, and share them with families, electronically or in paper form.
