  • The following document explains the mechanics of learning to decode print: Science of Reading.
  • Staff take the time to get to know children (e.g., what they like doing, what is important to them, what they feel or think about aspects of learning, what they feel they need help with etc.)
  • Staff are proactive in finding out what other services or agencies are involved with children and what they are saying or recommending.
  • Staff have opportunities to engage with relevant CPD around children’s needs and approaches to address them helpfully
  • Staff delivering interventions and providing support in the classroom follow programmes closely and ensure that their classroom support is in line with best practice guidance, such as from the Education Endowment Foundation.
  • Staff are effective in their approach to communication, monitoring, and information-sharing about specific and general aspects of progress.
  • Staff work towards developing self-efficacy and, eventually, independence for children.
  • Staff are solution focused and communicate encouragement and positivity in their work with children.
  • Staff provide plentiful specific and relevant feedback to build a growth mindset for the child.
