Transitions occur for children when they encounter a change. These could be small changes, e.g., from home into the car, from the car into the park, or larger transitions, for example, starting a new nursery or childminder placement or the death of a close relative. Transitions are inevitable, every day a child will encounter multiple transitions throughout the day.
Viewing transitions as a process rather than as an event supports children’s emotional well-being. Where possible transitions should be well-planned, with a process involving the child, their family, and the early years practitioner working with them. As every child is unique, some children may find transitions easier to cope with than others. For some children, even the routine transitions that occur on a daily basis can be difficult to cope with and these children may need support throughout the day. You may need to consider creating a plan of additional support so that children receive consistent care.
