- Elklan offers a range of speech, language and communication training for practitioners, staff, parents and carers.
- Talk Boost programmes enabling educators to support pupils with speech and language challenges.
- Makaton uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. Foundation and Enhanced courses can be arranged upon request subject to enough attending.
- Word Aware support children’s development of speech, language and communication in the classroom.
- Training available through Cambridgeshire SEND Training 0-25.
Awards
- Level 3 Award in support for children’s Speech, Language and Communication skills.
- Level 4 Award for Supporting Children and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication needs.
Speech and Language Therapy Services
Training delivered by Cambridgeshire Speech and Language Therapy Services. Free to access for all secondary school staff in Cambridgeshire.
- Tier 1: Training to support staff to understand Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and how to adapt teaching for young people with SLCN.
- Tier 2: One day equivalent training is a more in depth look at SLCN for staff working more closely with young people with these needs. Please contact your link SLT or ST for further details.

Early Communication
Learn about early communication skills and how to support children with difficulties in this area, including children with social communication difficulties. Consider strategies that can be used to support children with early communication needs e.g. visual support, people games, intensive interaction.
Understanding Language
Learn about how difficulties with understanding language can present in the classroom, consider how to differentiate your own language levels and explore simple strategies to support children’s understanding.
Spoken Language and Narrative
Learn about narrative development and consider strategies for supporting the development of narrative skills in the classroom, as well as strategies for supporting spoken language development.
Vocabulary
Find out why vocabulary is so important, how words are learned and consider how to maximise your effectiveness of teaching new words in the classroom.
Super Sounds
Learn about typical speech development and speech sound disorders. Consider common intervention approaches and strategies for supporting speech sounds and phonological awareness in the classroom.
