EY: Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)

Page Contents

All young children take time to develop the ability to regulate their emotions, attention, and behaviours. In most cases, this is not a cause for concern or an indicator of needs relating to Social, Emotional or Mental Health needs.

Due to the very wide range of typical development within the early years, it is unusual to have a diagnosis within this area at an early age, with often a period of watchful waiting whilst supporting the presenting needs being the preferred support route for this age group.

This section can support practitioners to meet the needs of children who have both emerging needs about their behaviour that are related to a transient need and to a wider developmental or ongoing need.
