EY: Cognition and Learning

Cognition refers to the thinking skills and thought processes that a child or young person has acquired through their prior experiences, and their ability to apply this knowledge to new situations.

Within the Early Years difficulties with cognition and learning may be observed across all areas of learning and development. They are often most notable in the specific areas and the skills relating to the characteristics of effective teaching and learning. Delays are likely to be observed in the child’s play or their ability to access learning opportunities independently.
